"Celebrating the beauty of nature and labour"

On 1st March 2025, the department of English, Don Bosco College, Kohima organized an educational visit to Zogike, a small privately owned coffee farm below Medical college, Kohima under the theme “celebrating the beauty of nature and labour” as part of its 4th department activity. The primary focus of the activity was to celebrate the beauty of nature and labour through hands-on experience in coffee farming, particularly in harvesting coffee using the right techniques.

The students were dropped off the bus at some distance away from the coffee farm where they embarked on a scenic walk in nature to reach the destination. This journey served as a reminder of how physical effort is often required to access nature’s treasures, reinforcing the theme of celebrating both nature and labour. Upon arriving at the farm a short program was conducted followed by the students being welcomed by Mr.Kezhazolie Cornelius Mere on behalf of the farm’s owner who then briefly shared with us the history and origin of coffee, the status of coffee in Nagaland and as well as the right techniques used for harvesting coffee cherries and how coffee plants are taken care and maintained.

The most engaging part of the activity was the physical work the students did in clearing around the coffee trees, learning to identify the ripest cherries and hand-picking them using the right method under the guidance of Mr.Kezhazolie. Aside from these, a unique part of the experience was tasting the freshly harvested coffee beans and also drinking the freshly brewed coffee, this experience gave the students the opportunity to have a direct taste of the raw and natural flavors of coffee.

The visit to the coffee farm was not only valuable and enriching but also a memorable one for the students who enjoyed the time spent in the midst of nature but also celebrated the sweat of one’s hard work. Through this activity students not only learned about coffee cultivation but also gained a deeper appreciation for the complex journey of coffee from a plant to a drink.
