On 11th March 2025, the Department of Psychology, 4th Semester, at Don Bosco College, Kohima, organized a program to celebrate the Mileinyi Festival, a significant event marking the beginning of a new cultivation season for the Zeliang Tribe. The celebration aimed to promote cultural awareness and appreciation among students.
The program commenced immediately after the general assembly and was held in the class premises. Neiweü Mere chaired the event, setting the tone for the celebration. The proceedings began with an invocation by Visasier Kielienyü, followed by a scripture reading by Chumdeno Tsopoe.
The highlight of the event was an insightful speech on the Mileinyi Festival, delivered by Keheiteilule Irangbe. In her address, she elaborated on the significance of the festival, explaining that it marks the start of a new year and the beginning of Jhum cultivation for the Zeliang community. She emphasized that the festival is deeply intertwined with their agricultural traditions, serving as a time for thanksgiving, purification, and seeking blessings for a prosperous harvest.
She further emphasized that Mileinyi is more than just a festival; it strengthens the bonds among family members and the community. The younger generation pays respects to elders, while rituals and sacrifices are performed to honor the spirits of their ancestors. The festival also serves as a reminder of their rich cultural heritage and the importance of preserving their traditions in a rapidly changing world.
As a token of appreciation, two gifts were presented to the Zeliang members of the class, Keheiteilule Irangbe and Peuhaulungsing. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Vungthungo Ovung, who expressed gratitude to all participants for their contributions in making the event educational and meaningful.
The celebration of the Mileinyi Festival was a wonderful opportunity to learn about and celebrate the cultural traditions of the Zeliang community, leaving everyone with a deeper appreciation of their rich heritage.
